Thank you to all of the 120 competitors who turned
out in Hood River for the Nationals. It was a great week, and
a great show of amazing talent from all of the racers. We're looking
forward to seeing you again next year in Maui! Also, we would
like to extend our gratitude to all of our generous sponsors without
whom we would not have been able to run a successful event.
Thank
you, thank you, thank you!
It was our pleasure to host the event,
and we hope to see you for more
great racing in the Gorge next season!
After a great day of wind on Monday (our
registration and practice race day), things shut down in the Hood
for 2 full days. ESPN SportsCenter filmed live from the Event
on Tuesday, July 26th (100 degrees and not a drop of wind) and
was only able to use footage shot during the practice racing on
Monday. The show aired on ESPN Tuesday at 3pm, 8pm and 11pm Pacific.
The wind returned to sailable late Wednesday afternoon, and PRO
Darren Rogers was able to get three starts off for the Bronze
Fleet which includes racers in the Sport, Prodigy and Formula
Experience divisions. We were honored to have been visited by
Janet Baxter, the President of US Sailing, who came to watch her
first windsurfing event. Janet reportedly was impressed with the
competition and will watch for good things to come from US Windsurfing
in the future!
Sailors arrived onsite Thursday to winds in the 20-25 range, and
after a 9:30a skipper's meeting, got set to run some slalom heats.
76 competitors decided to take the challenge, and were divided
into 4 Fleets, and ran 2 races each. Winds gusting to 38 were
measured by the race committee lat morning, which made for Epic
slalom conditions. Excellent racing, awesome wipeouts and killer
wind.
Friday saw nuking winds to start the day Formula racing, then
hot slalom action and again finished up with more Formula. Much
the same on Saturday, with 5 Formula starts to round out an excellent
week of competion. Again, thanks for coming!
